WELCOME TO COOKE CITY, MT

The Coolest Small Town In America

Welcome To The End Of The Road

Whether you’re coming from the West through Yellowstone National Park or headed from the East, Cooke City is the last stop from both ends (at least in the Winter). Located just outside the North-East Entrance of Yellowstone National Park, Cooke City is a historic mining town on the border of Montana & Wyoming that provides the ultimate backcountry experience in both summer and winter. Surrounded by the Absaroka Mountains, there’s thousands of acres of National Forest and Wilderness to explore. Snowmobiling, Backcountry Skiing, UTV’s, Off-Road Adventures, Overlanding, Backpacking and all types of adventures are welcome here. We’d call it the ultimate spot for fun “in the middle of nowhere.”

As a summer destination you’ll get to experience some of the most scenic road tripping in North America. To the East you’ll see “most scenic drive in America” when you head over the Beartooth Highway towards Red Lodge, MT. To the West, you’ll have the best wildlife viewing in Yellowstone as you pass through the Lamar Valley (nicknamed the “American Serengeti”).

The Cooke City & Silver Gate communities offer travelers and residents stunning, remote wilderness and plenty of recreation opportunities all year long in the surrounding Custer Gallatin and Shoshone national forests. The ancient Bannock Indian Trail is just outside of town and old miner’s cabins and the remains of hopeful mining claims sit silently in the mountains.

In our opinion winter is the best time in Cooke City. A true sled-in, sled-out town, snowmobiles become the main form of transportation once the snow flies. This little outpost boasts colossal, world-class snowmobiling with miles of epic backcountry making for a sled head’s dream. The season starts early and ends late, extending into June and sometimes even July. Spring days make for longer daylight hours and more riding. Climb to Daisy Pass at 10,000 feet. Free ride Henderson Mountain. Explore old mining country, play in deep powder meadows and boondock through the trees. Then, tell tales of your adventures at the local saloon. In the warmer seasons, hike, fish and explore the area by horseback.
